5 Halloween Pedestrian Safety Tips

Halloween is only days away and kids and adults alike are getting ready for a night of trick-or-treating, handing our candy, and attending parties. No matter what your plans include, safety should always be your top priority. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents tend to spike on Halloween night due to the increased presence of pedestrians on the street at night (when visibility is lowest) as well as an increase in intoxicated drivers.

At Holladay Law Firm, PLLC, we care about your safety. After handling countless pedestrian accident cases during our years in practice, we understand that pedestrian safety tips bear repeating not just at Halloween, but also throughout the year. Before your festivities begin, please take a moment to look through this list of pedestrian safety tips to help you and your loved ones avoid injury this holiday.

Stick to the sidewalk. If you plan on trick-or-treating with your kids or walking to and from a party, make sure that you stay on the sidewalk and avoid walking in the street. Be extra cautious around driveways where a driver pulling in or backing out may be less likely to see you.

Avoid distractions. A big part of pedestrian safety is being aware of your surroundings, so be sure to eliminate any distractions. Listening to loud music through headphones or staring down at a phone while you walk can put you at a greater risk of injury.

Use crosswalks and obey signals. Use crosswalks wherever they are available. If you need to cross a street that does not have a crosswalk, be sure to cross at the corner rather than in the middle of the street or from between parked cars.

Always yield to oncoming vehicles. You should never assume that an oncoming vehicle sees you and will slow down for you. Even if you have the right of way, err on the side of caution and wait until a car has completely stopped before crossing the street.

Increase your visibility. Many pedestrian accidents happen at night when visibility is lowest. In order to make yourself and your children more visible to motorists, add reflective tape or glow sticks to your outfit and/or carry a flashlight.

We hope that you find this information helpful and that you enjoy a happy, spooky, and most importantly SAFE Halloween!
