Thirteen-Year-Old Boy Dies in E-Bike Crash in Hawaii

In March 2022, a 13-year-old boy traveling westbound on Waipahu Street in Honolulu died when he crashed into the back of an SUV. The boy was not wearing a helmet when his scooter bounced off the SUV’s bumper and veered into on-coming traffic on the other side of the road. There he was struck by a Toyota truck. No one had been speeding or drinking. The roads were clear and dry. The teenager died after he arrived at the local hospital in critical condition.

Why was someone under 16 driving a bike in traffic alone? Because it’s not against the law. The laws have not caught up with the recent surge in e-bike use. Clearly, this boy should have had an adult with him. He should have been wearing a helmet. He should not have been in the same lane of traffic with an SUV. How many more children will we lose before the needed X-Treme Bike safety laws are drafted? 

E-Bike Statistics

While there is no known research data on the X-Treme brand of electric bike in particular, here is some general information on e-bikes: 

• Injuries from the use of e-bikes jumped 70% in the last four years. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, that spike turned into around 200,000 more E.R. visits than in previous years.
• People riding e-bikes are more likely to be hospitalized with internal injuries than other comparable riders (e-scooters, pedal bikes, pedestrians). 
• Those injured by electric bikes tend to be older than those injured by electric scooters. E-bikers averaged 31.9 years, while e-scooter riders averaged 29.4 years and pedal bikes averaged 25.2 years.
• Battery-powered transportation accounted for more than 190,000 emergency room visits and over 70 deaths between 2017-2020.
• E-bikers are also 3x more likely to hit a pedestrian than comparable riders. Many cities no longer allow e-bikes to use sidewalks for this reason. 
• Men and boys are more likely to be injured on electric devices than girls and women. Males made up over 80% of those injured on e-bikes. They accounted for 60% of those injured on e-scooters and 72.4% of those injured on pedal bicycles.
• Injuries involving electric bikes and scooters have grown and grown, causing 34,000 hospital visits in 2017 and 57,800 in 2018.
• Seventeen percent of e-bike accident victims had internal injuries, whereas only 7.5% of those injured on e-scooters or pedal bikes did.
• The biggest demographic of people injured in e-bike accidents were 18-64 years old. Ten to 14-year-olds were the main group injured by electric scooters.
• Of more than 245 million injuries reported in a 4-year study period, 3,075 of the incidents involved e-bike injuries. That is 0.13 per 10,000. Moreover, almost 10 million pedal bicycle injuries resulted in 385 per 10,000 of all E.R. visits.
